Every year on December 31st, I clean my desk area, sit down, open my laptop, and start typing my goals for the new year. You might wonder why I type my goals on my computer instead of writing them down. Over the years, I have found that writing my goals on paper is not effective. Either I lose the paper, it gets dirty, or I simply get tired of writing so much!
That way, I can easily reach my goal list any time on my computer and get a quick reminder and inspiration the moment I feel like quitting one of my goals.
Setting my goals for the new year is a ritual I have followed every year for a long time. I have found that this is the best way to keep myself focused on what I want to achieve in the coming year.
Do you want 2024 to be your year? To know how to write your goals effectively? Follow my steps below:)
1. Write down the categories that your goals belong to
Before you start setting up your goals, you first need to think of the categories in your life that you are willing to change.
Take a piece of paper and write down the categories you have in mind.
What does it mean? For example, if you want to save at least 70$ a month, the category you will write down is finance.
To help you think of the categories, just think of your typical day from the moment you wake up until the time you go to bed.
Some of the categories may be:
- LifeStyle
- School
- business/career
- Fitness
- social
- Routines
- finances
- Travel
- and more!
2. Open Word/pages doc and start to fill your categories
To set your goals, you can open a new Word or Pages document. Once you have opened the document, write a big title in bold letters, “My Goals for 2024”.
Then, create your first category and think of the different goals you want to achieve in this section. Imagine how you want this part of your life to be and set your goals accordingly.
Follow the next steps to write you should write your goals.
3. Make sure your goals are realistic!
When setting your goals, it’s hard to make sure that they are REALISTIC!
By realistic, I mean achievable and not necessarily easy.
For example, if you want to become a runner but have never run before, setting a goal to run a 10k is not realistic.
Instead, being aware of your limits and setting an achievable and appropriate pace is important.
4. Be as specific as you can!
When setting your goals, you must be as specific as possible.
Avoid writing the goal in general – write the exact steps that are going to help you achieve it.
For example, if you wish to become a morning person, do not write “to be a morning person.”
Instead, specify the action that follows it, such as “wake up at 6:15 every day.” (for tips to be a morning person, Check out my Post on how to become one)
5. Create a vision board
One of the best things you can do when setting up your goals is to create a vision board.
But what is it exactly?
A vision board is a collage of photos that inspire you and represent your dream life. It helps you focus on your goals and motivates you to achieve them.
To create your own vision board, head over to Pinterest and download images that inspire you and represent want to achieve. Once you have chosen the photos, you can create a collage using various apps available.
Finally, replace your current wallpaper with the vision board so you can see it daily and stay focused on your goals.
6. Add inspirational quotes
Including some inspirational quotes has proven to be a helpful way of staying motivated and focused.
These quotes tend to stick in your head and prevent you from giving up during the process of achieving your goals.
You can find such quotes easily by searching the internet or browsing through Pinterest. Adding these quotes to your goal list will keep you on track and help you accomplish them.
That’s all for now!
